Without getting too technical, the Oculus Rift system includes the VR head-mounted display, Touch controllers, and a multi-channel headphone sound system which provides a thoroughly immersive atmosphere. Although systems like this are only a few years old, the idea itself goes back several decades. In fact, the term, “Virtual Reality,” was introduced in the early 1950s.
Great strides were then made in the late 1960s that lead directly to today’s home systems. Improvements on those early iterations made in the 1970s resulted in more fully realised virtual realities. Specifically, the NASA Aspen Movie Map is widely considered to be the first successful virtual space. While crude, it allowed users to explore Aspen in three modes.
Most of these early systems were limited to military training and flight simulation, and the equipment was too large and expensive for commercial sale. While devices like the Nintendo Power Glove appeared in the 1990s and both Sega and Nintendo released early versions of virtual realism equipment, it was not until 2012 that home VR systems became commercially viable and the Oculus system was born following a successful Kickstarter campaign.
In 2016, the augmented reality game, Pokemon Go, swept the world. While not a virtual reality game by strict definition, it became a sensation which has helped propel the industry. Now, all of the major gaming systems have their own version of VR software and controls or are compatible with existing equipment. While the concept and terms have been used in science fiction stories for many years, they have now become part of the everyday lexicon.
